Summer Art Workshop
An annual art workshop offered by the UP Fine Arts Students during the summer. Caters to people from ages 3 to age 40. Drawing, Painting and lots of fun! This workshop began as a student initiative almost 20 years ago. Ever since then, it has become a Fine Arts tradition not only as a means to raise funds, but also as a way to promote art in Cebu, and encourage people to express themselves and discover their artistic side.
JOSE JOYA AWARDS and ANNUAL STUDENT EXHIBIT
Began in 1977, established by the late Jose Joya, Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in Diliman, who created the Jose Joya Awards as a manifestation of his support for the Fine Arts Program’s proliferation. Throughout its history, the Jose Joya Awards has aimed to showcase the best set of works that the students have produced during the entire year . The winning artworks become property of UPVCC. Often the exhibit is held in SM Mall, Cebu and is open to all.
Mindworks
An annual show of installations and performance art held around the campus at about six to ten o’ clock in the evening. Mindworks showcases art that is totally different from traditional art, such as painting, drawing or sculpture. Mindworks showcases art that utilizes the human body, sound and most especially, physical space. It is inspired by art movements such as DADA, Surrealism and Conceptual Art.
ID Panel and Painting Thesis Defense
Fine Arts has two majors, “Industrial Design” and “Painting”. Students pursuing either of these majors must go through a thesis defense in order to graduate. Painting students have their thesis defense for the first time in their 3rd year, afterwards, they have a Final Thesis Defense in the 4th year and one-man show exhibit. Industrial Design students have their defense more often, once every semester from 1st year to 4th year, and then again a Final Thesis defense in their 4th year. During the time of defense, the students showcase their artworks throughout the year, or a chosen body of works, and this is accompanied by a written thesis paper centered on an artistic problem and art theories that support the work.
